Daily brushing and cleaning between your teeth reduces the risks of gum disease. Gum disease arises when your body reacts to a build-up of bacteria around the teeth and gums. It is important to realise that certain bacteria remain in your mouth no matter how much you do this. In a healthy mouth there exists a balance between the good and bad bacteria. Signs of Gum Disease:
- Red, puffy, tender or bleeding gums
- Bad breath (halitosis) or taste in the mouth
- Loose wobbly teeth or teeth that are drifting
- Infections or abscesses on the gums or between teeth
When you have your teeth cleaned, the build-up of bacteria (Plaque) and its mineralised form (calculus) are removed from the surface of the teeth. Sometimes it is necessary to remove these deposits from below the gum line. It is true that certain individuals are more susceptible to gum disease. Certain medical conditions, medication, poorly contoured fillings and particularly smoking increase this susceptibility.
By getting your teeth cleaned on a regular basis you decrease your susceptibility to gum disease, your teeth feel smooth and they will look their best. Ask about our “water blaster “(prophy jet) if you feel your teeth are looking stained from your everyday consumption of tea, coffee or red wine.
